The theme

Maybe it's a direction the team stopped questioning years ago. Maybe it's a tension everyone feels and nobody names. Left alone, it doesn't go away. It just gets heavier, and quieter.

This dialogue isn't about fixing it. Not yet. It's the conversation that has to happen before anything else is possible. Gray elephants are often weak signals that have grown unnoticed to a scale nobody can handle anymore. Naming them is foresight in its most practical form.

Sometimes naming it, and talking about it openly, is already a relief.

What a Futures Dialogue is

As Personal Futurist, I speak with people, not to them.

A Futures Dialogue is a group conversation that grows from the people in the room. It shifts and deepens with every perspective shared. Nobody argues a case. Nobody needs to find the one right way forward. Instead, we gather voices and build on them together.

It's about sharing, understanding and embracing each other's experiences. And about the collaboration that becomes possible when that happens. Every dialogue is built on the Beyond Futures Mindset and strengthens communication and collaboration for shared outcomes.

Why I chose this theme

Gray elephants are the large, explosive issues in organisations and groups. They're rarely hidden. They're like ghosts nobody talks about. What stays unspoken quietly drains energy and narrows the futures a group can imagine together. Recognising and naming difficult themes is where every wider futures conversation begins.

Every Futures Dialogue is facilitated by me, personally. I bring a doctoral researcher's and MA's grounding in futures studies from the University of Turku, training as a solutions-focused brief therapist, and over fifteen years of running my own business, including losing it and rebuilding. In the room, my role isn't to have the answers. It's to hold a space where honest, difficult futures conversations can actually happen.
